The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (SFE) is an English-language reference work for literature from the science fiction genre, produced with the support of Victor Gollancz Ltd. is issued. It was first published in book form in 1979. The third edition, published in 2011, is available online free of charge.

history

Work on the reference work began in 1975 based on an idea by Peter Nicholls . The work is an ongoing, constantly updated project. Other collaborators are John Clute , David Langford and Graham Sleight (Victor Gollancz Ltd.) The first edition was published in 1979 as a book by Doubleday . A second edition was published as a book by Orbit Books in 1993 and as a CD-ROM in 1995 . On the basis of the revised database of the CD-ROM, the third edition appeared as an online reference work in October 2011, as the editors believe that the 1.3 million word edition from 1993 had reached the limit of marketability. A new book edition is not planned. According to the company's own information, the encyclopedia as of March 2017 comprises over 17,000 entries with 5.3 million words. A usage fee is not charged.
