Endurance Island is a tussock- covered island in the archipelago of South Georgia in the South Atlantic . It is located in the center of the Hauge Reef and is home to breeding colonies of the giant petrel .
The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 2009. It is named after the HMS Endurance , which was used in the Falklands War in April 1982 to recapture South Georgia after the invasion by the armed forces of Argentina .
