Medium-voltage termination in encapsulated design
An earth lock

A termination (EVS) is a component that terminates an electrical cable . This termination can be the end of a cable (usually no longer required) or the transition from a cable to another component or system, for example from the cable to an overhead line or a transformer or isolator .

For the secure termination of coaxial high-voltage cables , i.e. those with metallic shielding or sheathing, there is a special case of the earth connection . The earth connection serves to divert capacitive earth currents into the earth electrode of the high-voltage system.

tasks

The cable termination is intended to prevent moisture or dirt (for example due to capillary action ) from getting between the components of the cable . In addition, electrical insulation must be ensured. When transitioning to other components, the electrical conductor should also be safely guided to the corresponding component.

material

Various insulating materials are used as materials, including porcelain and various plastics. The material used depends on the exact application (cable end or transition, voltage level, etc.).

High voltage termination

processing

As a rule of thumb, the lower the voltage, the easier (and cheaper) the processing is. In low voltage applications , a prefabricated shrink tube (inside with hot glue ) is often pulled over the cable and shrunk on or the cables are passed through a rubber / silicone insulator so that a short end protrudes so that a cable lug can be pressed onto it. At higher voltages, the cable ends z. B. introduced into insulators made of plastic or porcelain and potted or multi-part cable terminations are mounted on the cables.
