List of cities and municipalities in East Frisia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The municipalities in the East Frisia region and their location within Lower Saxony

This list of cities and towns in East Friesland includes all cities and communities (both unit municipalities and joint communities and their member municipalities) in East Friesland . In this region, consisting of the independent city of Emden and the districts of Aurich, Leer and Wittmund, 467,289 people (as of December 31, 2019) live on 3,144.26 square kilometers, which is a density of 148.6 inhabitants per square kilometer (Ew / km²) corresponds. This means that East Frisia is less populated both in comparison to the state of Lower Saxony (168 inhabitants / km²) and in comparison to the national average (around 230 inhabitants / km²).

East Frisia consists of 63 cities and municipalities. Ten municipalities have city rights, including the two largest islands Borkum (by area) and Norderney (by population). 35 mostly small communities with a population in the three-digit range have merged to form six integrated communities. While the Jümme joint community consists of only three member communities, the Holtriem joint community comprises eight communities. There is a special feature in the integrated community of Esens: It consists of six rural communities and (as the capital) the city of Esens. The six joint communities are divided equally between the three districts of Aurich, Leer and Wittmund.

The islands of Memmert , Kachelotplate and Lütje Hörn located between Borkum and Juist (the latter two are defined as sandbanks ) are not included in this list, as they are unincorporated areas in the districts of Aurich (Memmert, 5.17 km²; Kachelotplate, 0.23 km² ) and Leer (Lütje Hörn, 0.065 km²). Memmert has been permanently inhabited by the island bailiff, who is responsible for nature conservation, since 1921. The residents of Memmert are listed as residents of their home community. The Wadden Sea between the mainland and the islands is also free of municipalities in its entirety.

Cities and (velvet) municipalities

This list includes both the joint municipalities and their member municipalities. According to the Lower Saxony Municipal Constitutional Law (NKomVG) , both bodies have both political and administrative functions. The member municipalities have their own municipal councils, but the joint municipalities also have a joint municipal council. In order to avoid double counting, the names of the joint municipalities are written in bold and followed by the term "joint municipality". Under the comments, it is listed for the joint congregations which member congregations belong (capital in bold ), and for the member congregations to which joint congregation they belong.

The listed superlatives refer to the number of inhabitants, unless otherwise stated. It is also mentioned whether a municipality borders on a non-East Frisian district (and the name of the same).

The table is based on the current annual figures from the Lower Saxony State Office for Statistics. The table is pre-sorted according to the number of inhabitants (descending); other sorting is possible by clicking the arrows.
