Location of the municipality Firrel in the district of Leer | ||
Firrel is a municipality in the joint municipality of Hesel in the district of Leer in Lower Saxony .
history
The community was founded as a colony in 1762 after the instigation of hirers from the Bagband community . The Firrel was chosen as the name for a sand ridge in a swampy area. The colonists had to prove that they had cultivated fields in the area. In 1790 there were already 32 houses in the bog colony. Their number rose from 50 (1802) to 74 in 1807. The area of the houses and the associated land was 170 ha. However, the development was much slower in the following decades: By 1841 the number of houses had risen to 89, by 1862 to 92, as the bog colonists were already more and more of the adjacent bog had peeled off. There was no room for expansion for new colonies. As a result, there was a wave of emigration from the middle of the 19th century, especially to the USA. Only around the turn of the 20th century did the population increase again. The population figures confirm this: in 1811 the place had 311 inhabitants. Their number rose over 346 (1823) to 524 in 1848. After that, a decline was recorded: in 1858 there were only 485 inhabitants, in 1880 even only 418. Only after the First World War (1919) did the population return to 521 Reached status of 1848.
religion
The oldest church community in town is the Baptist church . Its beginnings go back to 1865. There has also been an Evangelical Lutheran parish in Firrel since 1899 , which was parishally connected to the Parish of Hesel until it became independent on April 1, 1950. It includes the Lutherans from Neufirrel and Schwerinsdorf . It has about 1,600 members. The ev.-luth. Andreas Church was built in 1907.
politics
Municipal council
The council of the municipality of Firrel consists of nine councilors and councilors. This is the specified number for the member municipality of an integrated municipality with a population between 501 and 1000 inhabitants. The nine council members are elected by local elections for five years each. The current term of office began on November 1, 2016 and ends on October 31, 2021.
The last local election on September 11, 2016 resulted in the following:
Political party | Proportional votes | Number of seats | Change voices | Change seats |
---|---|---|---|---|
CDU | 67.1% | 5 | + 6.5% | 0 |
General voter community (AWG) | 32.9% | 4th | −6.5% | 0 |
The voter turnout in the 2016 local elections was 73.1%, well above the Lower Saxony average of 55.5%. For comparison - in the previous local elections on September 10, 2006, the turnout was 69.3%.
mayor
In member municipalities of joint municipalities, the mayor is elected directly by the members of the council. In the constituent meeting of the council, the council elected councilor Johann Aleschus (CDU) as honorary mayor for the current electoral term.
education
For the first 150 years or so since it was founded, Firrel belonged to the Hesel parish, which was initially also responsible for schooling. As early as 1765, three years after the moor colony was founded, a secondary school was set up in Firrel, and in 1804 a separate building was built for students from Firrel. However, the first full-time teacher only existed in 1821. Nine years later, an extension was added to the existing school building. A teacher's apartment was set up for the village teacher in 1859, and the place received a new school building just four years later. At the time, teaching was single, meaning that students of all grades were taught in one class. The addition of a second school class and thus the establishment of a second teaching post did not take place until 1925. Teaching continued in Firrel until 1966, and since then the students have been going to school every day in Hesel. The old school building was converted into a village community center.
Associations and associations
Since 1955 there has been a volunteer fire brigade in Firrel again. The Grün-Weiß Firrel sports club was founded relatively recently: It has existed since 1973. In football, the green-whites mostly play on the Leer district level. The annual sports week of the club attracts a four-digit number of spectators, as the organizers sign a higher-class team almost every year, including Werder Bremen several times and - during his time as a third and fourth division - also every year East Friesland's top-class club Kickers Emden .
