History

development

In 1822, the Hanoverian domain administration bought three pieces of land from what was then the community of Großoldendorf. This purchase is considered to be the foundation of the place Neufirrel. The place was laid out as a row settlement and bog colony. Until then, Neufirrel was considered an appendage of the Firrel colony . The village grew through the expansion of the colonies.

The first settlers were very poor. Many families emigrated to America in the second half of the 19th century , which slowed down development.

In the winter of 1879 a sand path was laid through the moor to Neudorf, which enabled heavy loads to be transported from the Nordgeorgsfehnkanal in Neudorf to Neufirrel. Sand roads in the direction of Firrel and Remels were also built. You could use it to get to Hesel and Leer . At the end of the 50s in the 20th century, these roads were further developed as asphalt roads.

A small school for around 50 children was built in 1830. A school building with a bell tower was built in 1866. It was taught here until 1969, after which the children started school in Remels and Stapel. Today the building on Alte Dorfstrasse is used as a cemetery chapel.

On January 1, 1973 Neufirrel was incorporated into the new municipality of Uplengen.

Surname

The settlement was initially called Bietzerfehn (after the Bietze brook). The colony initially called itself Klein-Firrel. From 1830 the name Neufirrel is officially used. Because of the poor conditions, the vernacular also called the place Opennärsfehn , because allegedly the residents had the rear half of their houses built without a roof.
