history

Surname

The meaning and origin of the place name are not clearly clarified. Sander is a word with probably Northern European origin and names fan-shaped sand and gravel areas that were deposited by the meltwater in the run-up to the glaciers and inland ice. It is very likely that the name Sander can be traced back to the fact that bog and morass prevailed between the Oldenburg and East Frisian Lands and that a tongue of sand protruded into the moor in Großsander , which made it easier for stagecoaches to cross the moor in the past centuries.

place

The first historical evidence goes back to the 14th century, when there was still a castle in Großsander . After the victory of the Bund der Freiheit (1430), this castle was fortified more intensively by Edzard Cirksena as a border post to the Oldenburger Land. The castle was taken in the Saxon feud in 1514 by the Count of Oldenburg and Hero Omken , and one year later it was recaptured by Count Edzard the Great . After the marriage of Count Enno II with Anna von Oldenburg , the disputes between Oldenburg and East Frisia came to an end. The castle was razed in 1535. The remainder of the castle wall is a listed building .

On January 1, 1973, Großsander was incorporated into the new municipality of Uplengen.

Economy, infrastructure and tourism

Today Großsander is dominated by agricultural businesses and thanks to a bathing lake ( Badesee Großsander ) that was created as part of the motorway construction , the place serves as a local recreation area for the Uplengen and Ammerlanders , but also for arriving tourists. Holiday apartments are increasingly being made available in Großsander.

Großsander's landmark is the rebuilt post office on the former main road from Oldenburg to Leer (formerly part of federal road 75 ).
