Uplengen Castle

The castle Uplengen is the namesake of the church today . It was in the Großsander district in the Leer district in East Frisia . Today remains of the ramparts are still preserved.

history

It is unknown who built the castle. The time of origin is also in the dark. The castle was strategically located. In Großsander, a tongue of sand protruded into the Lengener Moor on the eastern edge of the East Frisian High Geest , which enabled a transition over the moor, which otherwise completely separated the Oldenburger Land and East Frisia from each other. At the time of the East Frisian chiefs, the castle was under the control of Focko Ukena . This time was marked by constant feuds of the powerful families of East Frisia. It only ended with the victory of the League of Freedom by Edzard Cirksena in 1430. The Cirksena then took over power in East Friesland and had Uplengen Castle fortified. So they secured their rulership against Oldenburg. The Drosten of Uplengen Castle were probably also responsible for the Lengen area.

During the Saxon feud , the Counts of Oldenburg and Hero Omken took the castle in 1514. A year later, Count Edzard the Great was able to recapture it. After the marriage of Count Enno II with Anna von Oldenburg , the disputes between Oldenburg and East Frisia came to an end. Count Enno II then had the fortifications razed in 1535 and the castle building demolished in 1538. The stones found a new use in the construction of a new kennel at Stickhausen Castle . At the end of the 18th century, the wall and the moat were largely leveled. The remainder of the ramparts is around five meters high, 15 meters wide and 40 meters long. It is a listed building .
