Kost Hordiyenko
Konstantine "Kost" Hordijenko (also Hordiienko, Kostyantyn Hordijenko ; Ukrainian Гордієнко Кость , Russian Konstantin Gordejewitsch Gordijenko * in today's Poltava ; † 14. May 1733 in the Crimean Khanate ) was a 1702-1713 Ataman of the Zaporozhian Sich .
Life
Hordijenko studied at the Kiev Mohyla Academy . As an uncompromising opponent of the tsars , Kost Hordijenko rejected the hetman Ivan Masepa's willingness to recognize Russian supremacy over the Zaporozhian Cossacks . In March 1709 he reached the headquarters of the Swedish army in the Ukraine with 8,000 Cossacks , and with Masepa's mediation he signed an agreement with the Swedish king Charles XII on April 8 at Velyki Budyschcha . After the Battle of Poltava , he made it possible for the forces of Karl and Masepa to cross the Dnieper near Perevolochna in order to flee to Tighina in the Ottoman Empire . When Masepa died, Hordijenko supported the new hetman Pylyp Orlyk and took part in his 1711 uprising in the Ukraine right of the Dnieper . After he reached an agreement with the Ottoman Empire in 1712 , Hordijenko left Orlyk and until 1728 commanded the Cossack settlement of Oleschky under the protection of the Crimean Khanate .
