Jiří Toman

Jiří Toman (born  November 5, 1938 in Prague ; † April 20, 2020 in Geneva ) was a Czech - Swiss lawyer and expert in the field of international law . From 1992 to 1998 he worked as director of the Henry Dunant Institute in Geneva, to which he was a member from 1969, initially as a research assistant and later in various managerial positions. From 1998 to 2018 he was a professor at Santa Clara University in the United States .

Life

Jiří Toman was born in Prague in 1938 and studied law at the Charles University in Prague from 1956 to 1961 , where he also received his doctorate in 1966 . He then worked as a lecturer at various Prague universities until 1970. At the same time, from 1965 to 1970, he studied at the Geneva University Institute for International Studies . In 1981 he received his PhD in Political Science from the University of Geneva .

From 1969 to 1972 he was a research fellow at the Henry Dunant Institute in Geneva , the research, information and training center of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement . He then worked there until 1979 as Research Director, from 1979 to 1992 as Deputy Director and from 1992 to 1998 as Director. In the 1980s, he was also a consultant for several United Nations organizations , for example for the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO) from 1983 to 1988 and for the United Nations Disaster Relief Organization from 1985 to 1986 (UNDRO). From 1998 to 2018 he was a professor in the law school of Santa Clara University , where he had been visiting professor in 1982 and 1989. Then Toman worked as a visiting professor at the Danube University Krems . He died at the age of 81 as a result of a SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Jiří Toman's research and teaching activities in the field of international law focused in particular on the areas of human rights and humanitarian law, as well as international organizations .

He was Knight of Honor of the Order of St. George of the House of Habsburg-Lothringen .
