Fredrik Ferdinand Carlson (born June 13, 1811 in Karlshamn, Knivsta municipality , † March 18, 1887 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish historian and politician .

Life

Carlson enrolled at Uppsala University at the age of 14, where he studied philosophy up to his master's degree . He was u. a. a pupil of Leopold von Rankes . After completing his studies, he went on a scientific journey through Germany , Switzerland and Italy in 1834 , where he stayed for a long time in Rome . He returned to Sweden in 1836 through Austria , France and Prussia . During his trip, he was appointed lecturer in history at Uppsala University, and in 1837 he became a private tutor in Stockholm for King Oskar's sons , Prince Karl , Franz Gustav and Oskar .

In 1844 he was appointed adjunct of history and statistics and in 1849 he was appointed professor of history in Uppsala, which was completed by Erik Gustaf Geijer's death. In 1860/61 he was the rector of the university. 1849 a member of the Royal Society of Sciences in Uppsala , 1855, the Kungliga Vitterhets history och Antikvitets Academies in 1858, the Swedish Academy of Sciences , 1859, the Swedish Academy and in 1863 the Göttingen Academy of Sciences appointed, he retired in 1863 from his teaching post to serve as Prime Minister ( statsråd ) to take over the administration of the Ministry of Culture, which he held until 1870 and for the second time from 1875 to 1878. In this role he carried out a reform of the Swedish school system. Carlson was during the last six years of the items Reichstag member of the pastor stand and from 1873 until his death a member of the first chamber of the Swedish Parliament . In 1875 he was accepted as a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 1878 he became an honorary member of the Royal Physiographical Society in Lund , and in 1881 he was awarded the Order of Seraphine .

Fredrik Ferdinand Carlson was married twice. His first wife was Beata Charlotta von Post († 1841). The second marriage to Ulrika Christina Wahrolin had two children: Ernst Carlson (1854–1909), historian, educator, politician and member of the Reichstag, and the later Judiciary Gustaf Carlson (1861–1936).

Works

Carlson has been very fruitful as a historical writer ; his main work is the factual and formal history of Sweden (Gotha 1855-87), which he wrote as a continuation (vol. 4–6) of the work for the Heeren - Ukertsche collection History of the European States , which Geijer began . This also appeared in Swedish as Sveriges historia under konungarne af Pfalziska huset (Stockholm 1855–83, Volumes 1–7; until 1706).
