Ernst Carlson

Karl Fredrik Ernst Carlson (born March 14, 1854 in Stockholm ; † April 7, 1909 there ) was a Swedish historian, educator and member of parliament.

Carlson was the son of the well-known Swedish historian Fredrik Ferdinand Carlson . He studied history at Uppsala University with a licentiate degree and doctorate in 1877 (Om Karl XII.'s vistelse i Saxony 1706–1707). Then he was at the Reich Archives and registrar in the church administration. From 1880 to 1883 he was a lecturer at Uppsala University and from 1883 professor (lecturer) at the Realgymnasium in Gothenburg . In 1890 he became a professor of history at the newly founded University of Gothenburg, but returned to his old post at the secondary school in 1893. From 1904 to 1909 he held a leading position in the school inspectorate, after having played a key role in the reform of the Swedish grammar schools.

He published a study on the Altranstädter peace between August the Strong and Karl XII., On Sweden at the Congress of Vienna and gave the letters of Karl XII. out. In 1910 he also gave a new edition of the third volume (for 1706-1710) of the history of Sweden under Charles XII. his father and parts of the diary of Carl Piper as well as the reports of Captain James Jefferyes (officer with Karl XII. on his Russian campaign and later ambassador to Karl XII. in Bender) from 1711 to 1715 to his government. He also published a geography textbook for school and educational issues.

He was on the city council of Gothenburg and a member of the Gothenburg parliament (Second Reichstag Chamber, from 1897), where he was a co-founder of the Liberal Party and led the left-wing liberals advocating free trade.
