Arnold Heeren
Arnold Hermann Ludwig Heeren (born October 25, 1760 in Arbergen near Bremen , † March 6, 1842 in Göttingen ) was a German historian .
biography
Arnold Heeren was the son of the Arberg pastor and later Bremen cathedral preacher Heinrich Erhard Heeren . He attended the cathedral school in Bremen and from 1779 studied first Protestant theology , then philosophy and history at the University of Göttingen . From 1784 private lecturer in Göttingen, he undertook a trip to Italy, France and the Netherlands to prepare his edition of Johannes Stobaios . After his return he was appointed associate professor in Göttingen in 1787, full professor of philosophy in 1794, full professor of history in 1801, later court counselor and in 1837 secret councilor of justice. He was a member of the Göttingen Freemason Lodge Augusta for the golden circle .
With his influential work on the history of trade and transport, he broke new ground for the history of the time. With Friedrich August Ukert he founded the compilation History of the European States in 1829 and edited the Göttingen scholarly advertisements from 1833 to 1840 .
Heeren had been married to Wilhelmine Heyne (1779–1861), the daughter of his colleague Christian Gottlob Heyne , since 1796 .
