John Stobaius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes Stobaios ( Greek  Ἰωάννης Στοβαῖος or Στοβεύς , Latinized Stobaeus ) was an author and collector of ancient philosophical records and doctrines. He lived in the early 5th century AD.

Life

There is no tradition about his life. His name suggests that he was born in Stoboi in Macedonia . It is believed that he lived a short time after Hierocles of Alexandria as he quotes him, but no later authors. Since he does not cite any Christian authors, it is assumed that Stobaios was a heathen, but his first name suggests Christian ancestry.

The collection of excerpts from Greek texts compiled by Stobaios was intended as a textbook for his son Septimius, as can be seen in the introductory letter (preserved in the Bibliotheca of Patriarch Photios I ). Only the last part of the actual foreword has survived. Book I and (in parts) Book II deal with the fundamentals of physics and the rest of the collection with ethics . Of the 4 books in the collection, the second is only fragmentary and the third and fourth book only in a strongly changed form.

In total, Stobaios quotes over 500 Greek authors. Many of the most important fragments by the Greek playwrights (especially by Euripides ) are only preserved in this collection.

Books 3 and 4 ( Florilegium ) were first printed in Venice in 1535, and Books 1 and 2 ( Eclogae ) in Antwerp in 1575 with a Latin translation. A German translation of Books 3 and 4 appeared in Basel in 1551.
