Thomas Gaisford (born December 22, 1779 in Iford , Wiltshire ; † June 2, 1855 ) was a British classical scholar who made great contributions to Greek studies .

biography

Thomas Gaisford was educated at Hyde Abbey School in Winchester . In 1797 he began studying at the Christ Church College at the University of Oxford , where he later became a tutor . In 1811 he was appointed to the 26th Regius Professor of Greek , one of the most prestigious chairs for classical philology in the Anglophone world, at Christ Church. No other holder of the chair, including scientists like his successor Benjamin Jowett , Gilbert Murray , Eric Robertson Dodds or Hugh Lloyd-Jonesbelonged to, remained in the chair longer than Gaisford, who held it for 44 years. In 1831 he was rector ( Dean ) of the college, which he remained until his death. In 1843 he and his colleague Joseph Phillimore lost their sons William Gaisford and Richard Phillimore in a swimming accident at Sandford Lock in the Thames . Since 1848 Gaisford was a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

Gaisford was primarily involved in researching the ancient Greek language , but was also well versed in other sciences such as history , theology and civil law . He edited many ancient writers in the Greek language. As curator of the Bodleian Library and as representative of the management of the university at Oxford University Press , he had a significant influence on the direction of research and kept in contact with international research. He maintained good connections with Immanuel Bekker and Wilhelm Dindorf, among others . In memory of and in recognition of Gaisford's achievements, the Gaisford Prize was launched shortly after his death and has been awarded in two and now three categories since 1857. The winners include John Davidson Beazley and Ronald Syme .
