Benjamin Jowett

Benjamin Jowett (born April 15, 1817 in Camberwell , † October 1, 1893 in Oxford ) was an English theologian and philologist . He edited and translated numerous authors from classical antiquity, including Thucydides , Plato and Aristotle .

Life

Jowett was at Balliol College of Oxford University worked from 1855 as a Master . Under his rectorate, the Balliol rose to one of the top places among Oxford colleges. From 1860 he was one of Florence Nightingale's closest friends and was involved with her in reform efforts in British India . In 1872 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

He was buried in St Sepulcher's Cemetery in Jericho, Oxford .
