The St Sepulcher's Cemetery , in German Cemetery of the Holy Sepulcher , is an Anglican cemetery in the Jericho district of the English city of Oxford ( Oxfordshire ). The cemetery, originally opened outside the city limits in 1848, has not been used for burials since 1945 and is now used as a recreational and natural space for the city of Oxford.

history

St Sepulcher's Cemetery is on the grounds of Walton Manor , an old farm that was abandoned in the early 19th century - the walls on Walton Street are reminiscent of the former farm to this day. In the course of the cholera epidemics of 1831 and 1849 and the increasing practice of not leveling graves, the need arose to establish new cemeteries for the city of Oxford. The Osney Cemetery for West Oxford, the Holywell Cemetery for the city center and East Oxford, and the St Sepulcher's Cemetery for North Oxford were created. The cemetery was consecrated in 1848 and was used as a parish cemetery for the four (of the twelve Oxford) parishes of St Giles, St Paul, St Michael and St Mary Magdalen. A representative gate entrance and a chapel were added in 1865. The chapel fell into disrepair, however, and was demolished in the 1970s. Before that, in 1945, the cemetery had been closed for new burials.

Originally, the cemetery was surrounded by the works of the Lucy Factory , formerly Eagle Ironworks . In the meantime, these have been renovated and converted into residential buildings.

The cemetery is now administered by Oxford City Council and is used as a recreational and natural space. Urban cemeteries are an important shelter for numerous plants, animals and insects. In some places, the grass is deliberately not mowed in order to create certain habitats for some animal species. In a research project in 2001, 65 different plant species were counted in the cemetery.

A small association called Friends of St Sepulchre’s takes care of the maintenance of the cemetery and maintains an information board. The cemetery is listed as Grade II on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens of England.
