Hephaistion (grammarian)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hephaestion ( Greek  Ἡφαιστίων , Latin Hephaestio ) was a Greek grammarian who lived in the 2nd century AD.

He wrote several literary studies and an extensive textbook on Greek metrics . The work originally comprised 48 books, but was then edited twice by the author in abridged version, first in eleven books, later in three. Only a few fragments of all these works have survived. In contrast, Hephaestion's handbook ( Encheiridion ) of verse teaching, which was intended for school lessons and remained in use until the Byzantine period, is largely complete . Johannes Tzetzes wrote a versed version of the manual.
