Puerto Aguirre is the largest port in Bolivia . It is located in the far east of the country in the city of Puerto Quijarro in the Santa Cruz department .
The port is located directly on the border with Brazil on the Tamengo Canal , which connects the Laguna Cáceres with the Río Paraguay . This belongs to the river system of the Río de la Plata and connects the interior of Brazil, Paraguay and the east of Bolivia with the Atlantic . For Bolivia as a landlocked country , the connection to the ocean is particularly important, as a large part of international trade takes place via the oceans.
40% of Bolivia's exports, mainly soy and natural gas, go through the port . In recent years further investments have been made in the port in order to be able to export the iron (ore) that will be mined in El Mutún . The port also plays a major role in imports; for example, fuel is handled here. In the area of the port there is a free trade zone (Zona Franca Puerto Aguirre).
