About this picture

Neukamperfehn is a municipality in the district of Leer in central East Frisia . It is part of the joint municipality of Hesel in the state of Lower Saxony . The community has existed since the territorial reform in 1973. The name of the place is an artificial word and is composed of the names of the two districts of Stiekelkamperfehn and Neuefehn. Neukamperfehn has nothing to do with the Friesoyther district of Kamperfehn .

geography

location

Neukamperfehn is located in the former moor area in Central East Friesland. In the north Neukamperfehn borders on the town of Timmel ( municipality of Großefehn ) in the district of Aurich , in the west lies Jheringsfehn ( municipality of Moormerland ), in the south and east it is surrounded by the districts of Stikelkamp and Beningafehn of the municipality of Hesel .

Community structure

The community is made up of the districts of Neuefehn and Stiekelkamperfehn.

history

Old teacher's house in Stiekelkamperfehn, Schulstrasse 13, built in 1864; used today as a village community center

Neukamperfehn was created on January 1, 1973 in the course of the Lower Saxon community reform , when the places Stiekelkamperfehn and Neuefehn, which had been in the district of Aurich (East Friesland) until then , were merged into one municipality within the joint municipality of Hesel. However, the history of the two villages goes back much further. These were both founded as feudal settlements in the moor ( Low German : Fehn) in 1660 and are therefore among the oldest feudal villages in East Frisia. The Fehn character can still be recognized by the numerous canals (Wieken) that run through the place.

Neuefehn was founded in 1660 by the Dutch Albert and Cord Jobus and was initially called Jobusfehn and later Neues Timmeler Fehn . The name was eventually shortened to Neues Fehn or Neuefehn . Politically, Neuefehn belonged to the old district of Aurich until 1973 and to the church community of Timmel until 1912 .

Stiekelkamperfehn was founded in 1660 from the neighboring former Johannitergut Stikelkamp and named after it. The moor settlement was mentioned in 1734 as Stiekelkamper Vehn , and in 1848 as Stickelkamper Fehn . In 1912 the parish of Stiekelkamperfehn was founded, which has since also included Neuefehn and Beningafehn. But it was not until 1954 that its own church building was built, and for the 50th anniversary of the church building in 2004, the community was given the name St. Nikolai.

politics

Municipal council

The council of the Neukamperfehn community consists of eleven council members and councilors. This is the specified number for the member municipality of an integrated municipality with a population between 1001 and 2000 inhabitants. The eleven council members are elected by local elections for five years each. The current term of office began on November 1, 2016 and ends on October 31, 2021.

The last local election on September 11, 2016 resulted in the following:

Political party Proportional votes Number of seats Change voices Change seats
SPD 59.9% 6th + 5.4% +1
General voter community (AWG) 33.3% 4th −8.2% −1
The left 6.8% 1 + 2.8% +0

The turnout in the 2016 local elections was 51.6%, below the Lower Saxony average of 55.5%. For comparison - in the previous local election on September 11, 2011, the turnout was 52.8%.

In supra-municipal elections, Neukamperfehn is traditionally an SPD stronghold with results above 50 percent.

mayor

The mayors of the member municipalities of the joint municipality of Hesel are not elected directly, but by the council members in the constituent council meeting. The mayor and honorary community director is Joachim Brahms from the SPD, and deputy mayor Martina Akkermann.

Culture and sights

The places Beningafehn and Stikelkamp belong to the municipality of Hesel, but form a unit with Neukamperfehn in terms of structure and village life. This applies, for example, to the Evangelical Lutheran parish of St.Nikolai, the catchment area of the local elementary school , the sports club , the volunteer fire brigade and other activities. The everyday language of many of the villagers is East Frisian Low German .

Neuefehnkanal with lock

Immediately to the east of the village is the Stikelkamp Forest, one of the rare forest areas in East Frisia. There you will find the Stikelkamp estate and the forest cemetery of the former local estate family Lantzius-Beninga . The place itself is rich in the charming fen landscape. The Sauteler Canal , known locally as the Randkanal, separates the districts of Stiekelkamperfehn and Neuefehn over a long stretch. A restored lock in the Fehn Canal can also be seen in Neuefehn . A group from the Fehntjer citizens 'association looks after the restored old teachers' house and the historic frame saw at Gut Stikelkamp.

Since May 2010, the Pixxen Festival has been held annually for the benefit of the “Herzkinder OstFriesland” association, which now has over 4,000 visitors on the fairground and youth soccer field. In addition, the community celebrated the 350th birthday of the two districts with a street party in August 2010 under the motto "350 years of Fehndörpen bi´t Gut Stikelkamp".

Economy and Infrastructure

Neukamperfehn has a small industrial park. A local supply is only partially guaranteed due to the small size of the community. There is a butcher and a bakery, the nearest supermarkets are in Hesel and Moormerland. There are also some gastronomic establishments. In recent times the municipality has been focusing more and more on tourism .

In January 2018, the property tax rate was increased in order to be able to finance the urgently needed road renovation work in the future without local residents' contributions. This is so far unique in this form in Lower Saxony. A total of eleven paved roads with a total length of 8.5 kilometers are to be renewed by 2038; construction work began in August 2018.

In recent years, smaller new development areas such as B. the "Friesenweg" and "Am Kniepschloot" have been realized, others between Neue Strasse and Lönsstrasse are being planned.

traffic

Until the suspension of passenger traffic on the Leer – Aurich – Wittmund small railway in 1956, there was a train station for the surrounding villages immediately east of Stiekelkamperfehn, in the neighboring Hesel district of Stikelkamp. The old station building is still there. In the meantime it served the local sports club and is now the residential building of a larger farm. Today there is a regular bus service to Leer, which is mainly used to transport students.
