The energy, education and experience center

The energy, education and adventure center (abbreviation: EEZ ) is a building of a predominantly tourist nature that was created by the city of Aurich in the Sandhorst district and opened on July 1, 2015 after a construction period of 28 months. According to Aurich's own statement, it wants to present itself as the “city of regenerative energies” and is playing on the local wind power plant manufacturer Enercon, which is neighboring the centeron. This is to be underlined by the futuristic architecture of the four sickle-shaped buildings in a silvery stainless steel look. The property, which takes up 6,800 square meters, is located on the island of an artificially created lake fed by the Tannenhausen marriage and cost 27 million euros.

The center is home to the mechanics and electronics training workshops as well as the Enercon visitor center, the Aurich study seminar with the Rut-und-Klaus-Bahlsen-Stiftung's center for sustainable nutrition , offices of the Regional Pedagogical Center for the East Frisian Landscape and the “Energy” competence center of the growth region Ems axis and the Aurich Tourist Office. The center for science and technology offers laboratory rooms for the schools in the city. The public moves free of charge in the corridors, whose glass doors allow an insight but no access to these rooms. The city of Aurich uses or rents the entrance hall of the EEZ for events with a larger audience, for example to involve citizens in planning.

On the other hand, a completed 1800 square meter exhibition is chargeable and, in the opinion of the city, should attract the 110,000 annual visitors necessary to finance it - a number that was previously criticized as illusory. The more than fifty exhibits are specially made for this purpose and therefore have no museum character. They are intended to make “energy tangible”, are declared as unique and consist for the most part of touchscreens , which reveal their information by plugging in an electronic visitor ID in the form of a power plug. In the dome-shaped interior of the three-story “energy tower” (in the front picture), a ten-minute multimedia show runs on the hour . Stairs spiral around it, ending at the top of a surrounding open-air viewing platform, which is free to visit.

The desire for a corresponding exhibition has preoccupied the council and administration since around 2005 and was accompanied by the local press. Initially, it was to be realized under the title “The Sun of Aurich” in the city's harbor. The ever-increasing scope of the concept finally forced the new location.

An article published in the local press in early 2016 states that the EEZ currently costs the city of Aurich around € 500,000 a year to maintain it. Previously, there were doubts about the published visitor numbers, which, according to a local politician, could not cover the running costs.
