Energy engineering

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Energy engineering designates a professional field and includes activities in the areas of energy efficiency , energy services , property management , systems engineering , regulatory compliance in environmental issues and energy generation from conventional and renewable energy sources . The subject combines knowledge from the fields of physics , mathematics and chemistry with economic, legal and social science issues.

job profile

Energy engineers take on tasks in the project planning, planning, building and operating power plants and energy systems as well as in the planning, construction and energy supply of buildings. The focus of the tasks in the field of energy systems is on the networking of central, decentralized and local power plants in the distribution, storage and use of energy, in particular of fluctuating regenerative energy sources such as sun and wind. In the area of energy use in buildings and building systems, the focus is on efficient management of energy resources and the possibility of energy recovery . To do this, energy engineers determine key figures, create process manuals, write reports and analyze consumption data.

Energy engineers work in the field of energy management, technical sales, consulting and research and development.

education

In German-speaking countries, some colleges and universities offer courses that specifically prepare students for work as an energy engineer. The course designs and focuses are different. The names of the courses have not been standardized either. Graduates usually acquire a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) Degree . Subsequent master’s courses qualify for a Master of Science (M.Sc.).

Students should have a fundamental interest in the natural sciences, especially in the fields of physics and mathematics. In both departments, the main focus is on application-related knowledge, so the course is also suitable for those interested in these subjects without a particular interest in theory. In addition, students have to get involved in topics from the fields of law, economics and management. As a rule, students also implement practical projects and do laboratory work in the course of their studies.

The prerequisite for studying is a general university entrance qualification or a technical college entrance qualification . Some federal states or universities also require participation in an orientation test. Some universities offer dual studies . Participants complete a technical training course and take up the bachelor's degree parallel to the training.
