Energiefachwirt is a publicly recognized qualification at the master's level , which is awarded after successfully completing industry- related commercial advancement training in accordance with the German Vocational Training Act. The examination takes place in front of the examination board of a chamber of industry and commerce (IHK).

There are no uniform national legal regulations for the further training examination to become an energy specialist. However, special regulations have been issued by the competent chambers of industry and commerce.

Training duration

The training concludes with an examination before a committee of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Preparatory courses for the advanced training examination are mainly offered by private educational institutions; they can be completed full-time or part-time and usually last between 10 and 24 months. Participation in a preparatory course is not compulsory for admission to the exam.

Exam admission requirements

  • a successfully passed final examination in a recognized commercial or administrative training occupation of at least three years or
  • a successfully passed final examination in another recognized training occupation of at least three years and then at least 12 months of professional experience or

Examination and completion

The written exams in the field of business-related qualifications should last at least 60 and at most 90 minutes. The same applies to the written examinations in the area of ​​action-specific qualifications. There is also an oral exam. This consists of a situation-related technical discussion. For this purpose, the candidate selects a topic from the field of action-specific qualifications - usually from the sub-area of company-specific management . The exam duration, including the preparation time, is a maximum of 60 minutes.

After successfully completing both parts of the exam, the examining Chamber of Commerce and Industry awards the publicly recognized qualification as Certified Energy Specialist IHK .

Financial support opportunities

Participants in advanced training courses to become an energy specialist can apply for benefits through the "Master BAföG" in accordance with the Advancement Training Assistance Act to fund the course and examination fees .
