The engganobeo ( Gracula enganensis ) is a little researched bird of the starling family . It is endemic to the island of Enggano off the coast of Sumatra . At times it was considered a subspecies of the Beos ( Gracula religiosa ).
features
The engganobeo reaches a size of 27 cm. There is a small patch of bare facial skin under the eye. Flaps of skin can be seen behind the eyes, which are almost fused to the neck. The feathers on the sides of the head point upwards and form a tuft. The plumage is predominantly black. The head, neck and coat are bright purple and shiny. The rump has a turquoise sheen. The underside is duller and less shiny. The wings and tail are brownish black. White spots on the inner vane of the outermost hand wing P9 and both flags of the other hand wings form a large window. The iris is dark brown. The bare skin of the face and the flaps of skin are yellow. The deep beak is orange to red with a yellow tip. It is shorter than other Beo species. The legs are yellow. The sexes look the same. The voice and the young birds are so far undescribed.
Habitat and way of life
Little is known about his way of life. It searches for food in wooded areas and feeds on fruits, nectar and insects.
