English pouters

The English pouters are two breeds of domestic pigeons that belong to the group of peanuts . Specifically, these are the English Großkröpfer that often simplified English pouter is called, and the English Zwergkröpfer .

Both have an extremely upright posture, "so that one could draw a vertical line from the eye to the standing surface". The large pouters are even considered to be the largest of the high-standing goiter pigeons (size: 40–48 cm from the tip of the beak to the end of the tail). The Zwergkröpfer, on the other hand, is the smaller version of the English Kröpfer and with a maximum length of 35 cm is hardly larger than the Brno Kröpfer, for example . The duo of English large and English dwarf peppers is one of the few examples of dwarfism in the field of pedigree pigeons .

The back line of the English crooks falls down to the tail end. The ratio of the front to the back is about 2/3 to 1/3. The feet are feathered. They are very lively and trusting. Both English large and dwarf peppers are recognized in the colors white, black-hearted, dark-hearted, dominant red-hearted, dominant yellow-hearted, blue-hearted, blue-hearted, brown-white-hearted, red-white-hearted and yellow-hearted. At shows, these pigeons are judged primarily on their shape.

English large pouter

The English pouter is one of the most famous pedigree pigeons. It originated in Britain and is one of the oldest breeds regularly described in ancient scriptures. The first descriptions come from Willughby (1678) and Moore (1735).

Around 1850 the first representatives of this breed were introduced to Germany, where it was widely spread.

English pouters were crossed into most pouter breeds for refinement, the anglicization of which (high upright posture, narrow body) was not always to the advantage of the respective breeds.

English dwarf pouter

The English dwarf pouter was created around the middle of the 19th century and is therefore not nearly as old as the English pouter. Sir John Sebright (1767–1846), the breeder of the Sebright dwarf chickens, was one of the first successful breeders and is considered to be the breeder of the English dwarf pouter, whose breeding was unfortunately lost. The London ornithologist William Bernhard Tegetmeier (1816–1912) also studied them and used various European dwarf peppers, v. a. small, large peppers and Brno peppers as the basis for his breeding. English dwarf peppers were introduced to Germany at the end of the 19th century. Initially, however, they were not widespread, since, according to Bruno Dürigen, the Brno "seem more delicate, more beautiful, finer". In the 1920s, however, there was a trend reversal and by the mid-1930s they were just as widespread as the large Kröpfer.

The dwarf kröpfer is about a third smaller than the large kröpfer and differs from the Brno kröpfer u. a. through the barrel fletching and the uncrossed wings. The toe fletching of the English dwarf pouter is plate-shaped, but the toes and legs of the Brno pouter are not feathered. The long wings are carried "tightly closed" by the dwarf crook, their tips should not cross on the tail. The wings of the Brno, however, are clearly crossed.
