English breakfast tea is a traditional blend of different black teas .

Composition and properties

Assam , Ceylon and Kenya teas are mainly used . It is one of the most popular tea blends in British tea culture . The tea mixture is generally described as full-bodied, strong, rich. It is designed to be drunk with milk and sugar for a hearty English breakfast .

origin

The origin of the name is unclear. The UK has a long tradition of drinking blends of different black teas. The designation of these teas as “English breakfast tea” does not seem to come from Great Britain, but from the United States when they were still British colonies . Another source, based on an article in the Journal of Commerce , dates the naming to the year 1843, when a British immigrant named Richard Davies is said to have sold a tea mixture of that name in New York City . The original source can no longer be found, but an edition of the “Daily Alta California” from 1876 mentions “ a New York commercial journal ” as the source and names 1844 as the year of origin.

Reports that the origin of this tea blend in Great Britain date back to 1892, when the tea was referred to as "breakfast tea" in Scotland. It became popular after Queen Victoria tried the tea at Balmoral Castle and brought a supply of it to England. In the course of time the tea received the prefix "English".
