Engraulicypris ( Syn .: Mesobola Howes, 1984 ) is a genus of small freshwater fish from the carp-like familyand consists of seven species. The genus occurs in rivers and lakes of southern Africa.

features

The fish are 4 to 13 cm long and have an elongated body. Similar to the marine anchovies, their large mouth extends to the rear edge of the orbit or beyond, a feature that led to the generic name ( Engrauli from Engraulidae (anchovies) + cypris from Cyprinidae (carp fish)). Further diagnostic features of the genus are the lack of a scaled lobe at the base of the pectoral or pectoral fins, a dorsal fin that begins behind the midpoint of the standard length and is more or less exactly above the beginning of the anal fin, and pectoral fins that do not extend to the beginning of the anal fin pass. Engraulicypris species are largely monochrome without vertical bands or stripes.
