Enrico Bonatti (* 1936 ) is an Italian marine geologist and geochemist.

Life

Bonatti obtained his laureate as a geologist in Pisa (University and Scuola Normale Superiore) in 1959 and his habilitation (Libera Docenza) in 1967 at the University of Pisa. 1959/60 he was a Fulbright Fellow at Yale University with George Evelyn Hutchinson and then at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography . In 1964 he became Assistant Professor of Marine Geology at the University of Miami , Associate Professor in 1968 and Professor in 1971. From 1975 he conducted research at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University, where he is a senior scientist. From 1997 to 2002 he was also Professor in Pisa and Director of the Institute of Marine Geology of the Italian Research Council (CNR) and from 2003 to 2006 Director of the Institute of Marine Research of the CNR. From 2003 to 2009 he was Professor of Geodynamics at La Sapienza University in Rome.

He dealt with the formation of iron-manganese nodules in the deep sea and with plate tectonics and oceanic crust, for example at the extension of the fracture zone of the African Trench in the Red Sea (in the Afar Triangle) or as a member of the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) in the Tyrrhenian Sea. He dealt with hot spots and mid-ocean ridges and the thermal structure of the oceanic mantle. He led over 30 marine geological expeditions.

Bonatti was part of a team from the University of Bologna who wanted to identify Lake Cheko as a relic (and impact site) of the Tunguska event in 2009 .

In 2001 he received the Antonio Feltrinelli Prize in Natural Sciences, in 1999 the H. Patterson Medal of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and in 2015 the Shepherd Medal of the Society for Sedimentary Geology . In 2010 he became a full member of the European Academy of Sciences , and in 1994 he was elected a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences .
