Ensemble old town Burgau
The Old Town Burgau ensemble comprises the oldest town center in Burgau in the Günzburg district in Bavaria . Around 1300, a market town developed around the castle, which dates back to the High Middle Ages and was first mentioned in 1147 .
The steep castle hill, which is separated from the ridge west of the Mindeltal by a deep ditch towards the south, is concentrically enclosed by the Norbert-Schuster-Straße and Stadtstraße, which forms the center of the village with the northern extension of the church square.
In addition to the strongly fortified castle, Burgau had no walls of its own and was only closed off by two gates before the 16th century, one of which, the so-called block house tower , has been preserved in the shape of 1614.
On the still clearly emerging in plan medieval basis, the town houses of the 16th to 18th centuries, mostly rise gable constantly oriented to the street. They are dominated by the castle, which was heavily renovated in 1704, today’s castle, and the Catholic parish church of the Assumption of Mary from 1789.
