Blockhouse Tower (Burgau)
The blockhouse tower in Burgau , a town in the Swabian district of Günzburg , was built at the beginning of the 17th century. The gate tower at Stadtstrasse 2 is a protected monument .
History and description
The blockhouse tower was built in 1614 according to plans by Antonio Serro , court engineer of Elector Wolfgang Wilhelm (1614–1653) of Pfalz-Neuburg . The gate was given the name Blockhausurm because it contained the block into which the perpetrators were put up for punishment.
An octagon rises above the square substructure, crowned by an onion dome. The coat of arms of the Margraviate of Burgau with the Habsburg double-headed eagle is on the octagon .
Elias Holl's towers in Augsburg could have served as a model .
