The old town hall on the market square of Krumbach

The old town hall in the Swabian town of Krumbach is a multi-storey building from the 17th century that stands on the town's market square . It is one of the city attractions.

location

The former town hall stands at the highest point of the narrow ridge between the valleys of the Kammel and the Krumbach , on which most of the historic town center of Krumbach is located. When looking at historical maps of Krumbach, one can see particularly well that the town hall on the market square was the center of the town, as all the streets of the market at that time led to the square.

history

Today's old town hall was built in 1679 on the site of a previous building in the baroque style.

Originally, large parts of the building were used as a Schranne and “market hall”. The cellar, which can be reached from the west facade because of the sloping terrain to the west, was home to the wine cellar. The ground floor and the two attic floors served as granaries, and meat products were also offered on the ground floor. The courtroom and clerk's room were on the upper floor.

The building was rebuilt several times in the 19th and 20th centuries. Most of the changes were made during the 1933/34 renovation. During a further renovation in 1950, the attic floors were also expanded to make space for more offices.

Despite these expansion measures, the building became too small for the city administration, whereupon it moved into the current town hall building, which was originally built as a savings bank. Since then, there have been shops on the ground floor of the Old Town Hall, which today include the town's tourist information office.

description

Facade painting on the west facade of the building

The rectangular building has a gable roof with a ridge turret on an octagonal floor plan on the eastern side of the building. The east gable of the building has open arcades on the ground floor, which were bricked up over time, but were reopened during the renovation in 1933/34. Above these arcades, the rich half-timbered facade begins, which in the course of time has also been covered with plaster.

In contrast to the east facade facing the market square, the west facade of the Old Town Hall is relatively unadorned. Since the renovation in 1976, a large wall painting has adorned this facade, on which no half-timbering is visible. In the upper part of the painting, the double-headed eagle from Upper Austria is depicted, which reminds of Krumbach's membership in the margraviate of Burgau . The coats of arms of the district of Günzburg and the city of Krumbach form the center of the picture. Below are the coats of arms of the ruling families who ruled Krumbach in the times of the margravate, in which the place was pledged by the Habsburgs: (from left to right) the coat of arms of the Ellerbacher , that of the Lamparter of Greifenstein, that of the weaver of Pisenberg and the coat of arms of the Counts of Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn .

Others

The fountain in front of the town hall was built during the redesign of the market square. Before the redesign, the market square was used as a parking lot.
