Entdecker is a board game by Klaus Teuber that was released by Goldsieber in 1996 . It was illustrated by Franz Vohwinkel . The aim of the game is to discover unknown islands and collect explorer chips. To do this, superiority on the islands must be achieved.

The game is reminiscent of the settlers of Catan , and in fact Teuber's original game idea was converted into a complex game in three different individual games: 1995 Catan, 1996 Explorer and 1998 Lionheart . The gameplay is very similar to Carcassonne .

Entdecker is suitable for 2 to 4 players, ages 10 and up, and takes about 45 minutes.

In 2001 a revised version appeared as The New Explorers .

The game

Game setup

The rectangular game board consists of three areas:

  • Undiscovered Area - New islands are discovered here
  • Outskirts - From here the undiscovered area is reached
  • Success track - the success marker is moved for discovered islands and discovery chips.

Course of the game

A player takes the ship, goes on discovery and first decides how many explorer cards he would like to draw. New land is only discovered when a tile on the board “fits” on a space next to the ship, otherwise it expires. If land has been discovered, a pawn can be placed on the strip of land. When an island has been fully discovered, the score is scored: first the greatest explorers are determined, then the island value is calculated. Whoever has the most settlements, forts or explorers on the island receives the full points, whoever has the second most receives half, etc. When all islands have been discovered and all fields are covered with tiles, the game is over.

Victory conditions

The winner of the game is the player whose success marker is furthest on the top of the success track.
