Relief time (discharge days earlier age and free time) at a duty ratio of the period in which a workable workers while continuing to pay the salary of the work requirement for the provision of work performance is freed. As a rule, a certain number of relief periods are granted annually for selected groups of employees through collective agreements or in-house collective agreements.

The aim is to ensure age-appropriate and age-appropriate working conditions within the framework of a life phase-oriented working time policy .

In November 2011, the industrial union BCE and the employers' association Nordostchemie concluded the collective agreement for the organization of working hours for the eastern German chemical industry (LePha) and provided for appropriate relief times for selected groups of workers in a voluntary works agreement. The collective agreement of the Diakonie in Lower Saxony agreed in 2016 also provides for a right to seven working days (relief days) in the calendar year after reaching the age of 56 or 58 due to the increased need for regeneration that is regularly expected due to age. The collective agreement concluded in 2012 on demographic change and intergenerational equity of the Hamburg-Holstein transport company (VHH), for example, provides for gradual relief days from the age of 55.

All regulations on the discharge days are often based on the Knauth-Hornberger rules according to Sonia Hornberger and Peter Knauth. After that, these relief days are binding for a calendar year, non-transferable and expire in the event of vacation, illness or other absences. In addition, these cannot be used for vacation extensions. The relief days are usually calculated at 7.8 hours per day, like vacation pay without any surcharge.

Trivia

The concept of the relief day is also used to insert a day at the beginning of each fast with less food intake or with renouncement of certain foods.
