USBV defusers are specialists in defusing unconventional explosive devices and incendiary devices (USBV).

Every German federal state has USBV defusers. They are mostly affiliated with the state criminal investigation offices of the police, only in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania they belong to the ammunition recovery service , which in turn is affiliated to the police via disaster control (via the office for central tasks and technology of the police, fire and disaster control). On the federal side, the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) has its own USBV defuser, as does the federal police .

The training to become an IED defuser extends over several courses that are carried out centrally by the Federal Criminal Police Office. The BKA receives support from the federal states, the technical relief organization , the armed forces and the federal police.

The ordnance disposal service is responsible for the disposal of all kinds of explosive ordnance, i.e. conventional ammunition and bombs .
