Epeorus sylvicola is a species of insect belonging to the order of the mayflies (Ephemeroptera).

Characteristics of the larva

The body is strongly flattened, yellowish in color with brown markings and up to 14 millimeters long. The eyes are on the top of the head. The very wide legs are provided with a bristle border. There are seven pairs of tracheal gills , each consisting of an oval leaf and a tuft of thread underneath. The gills lie on top of each other like roof tiles. The species is the only mayfly larva that lacks the terminal thread .

Occurrence and way of life

The species occurs in Central and Southern Europe. It is absent in northern Germany. The larvae habitat are streams and small rivers that flow quickly and are rich in oxygen. They stand under or on stones and can walk very nimble. Epeorus sylvicola does not move the gill leaves. The food consists of periphyton . The generation period is one year. The flight time of the Imagines ranges from July to August.
