Ephraim Mirvis (born in 1956 near Johannesburg , South Africa ) is an Orthodox rabbi . He has been the Chief Rabbi of the United Kingdom since September 2013 .

His father was a rabbi in Cape Town ; his grandfather was also a rabbi. In 1973 his family moved to Israel where he attended secondary school. He studied at the academies Yeshivat Kerem BeYavne and Yeshivat Har Etzion and received his ordination as a rabbi at Machon Ariel in 1980. At the same time he studied classical Hebrew and pedagogy in Pretoria. Mirvis is a trained schochet which allowed to slaughter according to Jewish rite and mohel , who performs circumcisions.

He lives in Finchley , London .

He received his first job as rabbi at the Adelaide Road Synagogue in Dublin in 1982 and was appointed Chief Rabbi of Ireland in 1984 at the age of 28 . In 1992 he succeeded Jonathan Sacks as rabbi at the Western Marble Arch Synagogue in London . In 1996 Mirvis became rabbi at Finchley Synagogue, one of the largest Jewish communities in London. He was involved in interreligious dialogue and was President of the Irish Council of Christians and Jews from 1985 to 1992. He also attended various meetings with British church leaders. He received an imam at his synagogue and organized meetings between members of his community and members of the Finchley Mosque.

In December 2012, Mirvis was appointed Chief Rabbi of the United Kingdom.
