Epipodius and Alexander

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Epipodius and Alexander († 178 in Lyon ) were Christian martyrs and saints .

Legend has it that Epipodius and Alexander were two friendly citizens of Lugdunum (Lyon) who were persecuted for their Christianity. Epipodius came from Lugdunum itself, while Alexander was of Phrygian origin. After numerous Christians in the city had been executed in 177 (see Blandina and Pothinus ), Epipodius was also denounced as a Christian by his servant to the Roman authorities, subjected to numerous tortures and finally beheaded. Alexander was then also tortured two days later and then crucified, whereby the Martyrologium Romanum mentions that with him another 34 Christians suffered the martyrdom.

Adoration

In the Martyrology, Alexander is commemorated on April 24th ; by the way , April 22nd is a memorial day for both saints . The relics of the two saints were buried next to the relics of Irenaeus of Lyon under the altar of Lyon Cathedral in the 6th century . Epipodius is the patron saint of students and victims of fraud and torture.
