Epitaph for Georg Letslin

Epitaph for Georg Letslin.

The epitaph for Georg Letslin is one of 14 epitaphs of the Uffkirche in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt . The outer epitaph is dedicated to the Cannstatt teacher Georg Letslin († after 1638) and his wife Maria Großmann (1598–1638). From the original three-story Renaissance epitaph by an unknown master, only a partially badly damaged aedicule with the memorial inscription has survived.

description

The wall epitaph is attached to the south wall of the church to the left of the completely preserved, three-story epitaph for Jakob Spittler . From the Letslin epitaph only the aedicule has survived, which is similar to the large aedicula of the Spittler epitaph. It can be assumed that the Letslin epitaph also had a small aedicule with a gable top. The lithograph of the Uffkirche from 1830 (see picture above right) shows only an imprecise picture of the south wall, but shows two identical three-story epitaphs to the left of the portal ( → picture ).

The aedicula rests with 2 Corinthian columns on a flat console plate, which is supported by 2 volute-shaped consoles. The capitals, the console plate and the consoles are badly weathered. The recessed inscription panel with the well-preserved memorial inscription is attached between the pillars (inscription 2). It is crowned by a crossbar with the also well-preserved inscription of a bible solution (inscription 1), which is divided into two by a badly damaged keystone ( agraffe ). The entablature consists of an architrave, frieze and cover plate, which are badly damaged. The frieze has a long oval medallion, the content of which is no longer recognizable.
