Sarup earthworks

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The earthworks of Sarup ( Danish Sarupanlæg - German  "Sarupanlagen" ) are prehistoric earthworks of the funnel cup culture (TBK) from the early Neolithic in the south of the Danish island of Funen, discovered in 1967 and excavated between 1971 and 1984 .

description

A sandy headland between two rivers was fenced in with an approximately 3.0 meter high palisade made of 1,800 divided, 30–40 cm thick oak trunks. The enclosed area is 8.5 hectares. 19 enclosures secured by palisades were built along the outside of the palisade. Outside there were also houses and a system of double trenches, as well as elongated pits. There were other palisades in parallel that marked the entrance or areas for different purposes. The entrance is only 1.4 m wide. Skulls of cattle, sheep and pigs as well as human skulls or parts of these and other bones as well as ceramic shards and entire vessels were found in the elongated depressions. The Sarup sites date from around 3400 BC. And are a bit older than the megalithic systems .

There were no finds within the palisade. Shattered pottery, burnt bones (including human bones), burnt stones, and charcoal were found on the outside. The construction of such a facility must have taken about three months.

Around 3250 BC A smaller complex was built with Sarup II. It had the shape of a crescent moon and an area of around 3.5 hectares. Sarup II has a circumferential palisade and two parallel trenches on the outside. During this time, large stone graves were already being built and very high quality ceramics were produced, which were sacrificed before the graves were broken into .

Around 800 plants of this type have been found in Europe. About 30 are known in Denmark, including at Haderslev, Jægerspris and Skævinge in North Zealand. Vasagårdsanlæg , but also the Goseck district moat in Germany, are similar .
