history

The company was founded in 2003 by Chris Möller and Uwe Kampschulte as a start-up in Berlin. In 2006 around 200,000 rental items were offered on the platform, and in 2007 the number quadrupled to around 640,000. In 2007 the Holtzbrinck Group joined erento. The publisher's venture capitalist, Holtzbrinck-Ventures GmbH , took over 13% of the company in order to position it as the “ eBay of the rental market” according to its own statements . In 2011 the Austrian publishing house Russmedia took over(until 2012: Vorarlberger Medienhaus) all shares in erento. In 2013 the company took over the Finnish platform iRent.fi from Laakeri Media. With the purchase of the portal, erento took a step towards the private rental market. In 2020 erento took over the motorhome agency Campanda.

According to their own information, around 9 million users visited the German erento website in 2013. All erento pages contain around 980,000 products and services that are offered by over 3,000 rental companies.

Business process

Erento's customers are landlords who offer a physical product or service for rent. In July 2010 the business model was transferred from a commission model to a contact model. With the contact model, each landlord can post a certain number of items per month for a fixed amount. The contact details of the landlords such as company name and phone number have been publicly displayed since the contact model went live. Potential tenants can contact their chosen landlord via the erento website.
