Eressea is a turn-based strategy game that is played via email and takes place in a fictional fantasy world. The name of the game is derived from Tol Eressëa , a fictional island from the stories of JRR Tolkien . The game has had weekly moves since August 27, 1996 with a few exceptions. Eressea has been around for over 900 rounds. In April 2015, Eressea had a good 200 parties. In March 2002, Bravo Screenfun magazine reported on Eressea. Then the number of players skyrocketed. Eressea had the player highlight with over 2000 parties, currently the number of players is quite stable.

The game is designed for any number of players. The game world consists of many islands and is populated by the player parties and a global monster party. As a player you control a party that belongs to one of several races from the typical fantasy repertoire and whose units can learn different talents, mine raw materials and build buildings, means of transport and weapons.

In the main game Eressea, there is no official goal or end of the game. However, there are several direct offshoots under the name Vinyambar. The Vinyambar games have partly more, partly less big differences in rules compared to the original game, some even have a specific and fixed game goal. All Vinyambar variants are also chargeable. In July 2009 a new game world with changed rules was started. This should serve as a test for newer versions of Eressea.

The evaluation is text-based, but programs are freely available that convert the evaluation into graphics and support the creation of the moves.

The game was originally an offshoot of German Atlantis , a German-language version of the English Atlantis 1.0. You can now play it with English texts. Since December 2008 registrations for this are no longer possible, but the game continues.

The game management is currently experimenting with the abandonment of players in old and meanwhile uninhabited regions. If the test players successfully master the challenges, a new registration, initially for former players, will be possible again.
