Thomas Eric Marshall McLuhan (born January 19, 1942 - † May 18, 2018 in Bogotá ) was a Canadian author and media theorist .

Life

Eric McLuhan was born in 1942 to the philosopher and communication theorist Marshall McLuhan and his wife Corinne Lewis . He had five siblings: twins Mary and Theresa, Stephanie, Elizabeth and Michael.

In 1972 he received his B.Sc. in Communication Studies from Wisconsin State University . At the University of Dallas , he received an MA in 1980 and a Ph.D. in 1982. bestowed in English literature.

In 1980 McLuhan developed the Thinking and Writing Workshops together with Roger Davies and founded the communications consultancy McLuhan & Davies Communications, Inc. with him .

He and his father wrote the books Laws of Media , Media and Formal Cause, and Theories of Communication . He also published the books Electric Language (1998), The Role of Thunder in Finnegans Wake (1997) and editions of collected works by his father; The Book of Probes (2011), Marshall McLuhan Unbound (2005, with Terrence Gordon ), The Medium and the Light (2010). Together with Frank Zingrone, he published the book The Essential McLuhan in 1997 .

McLuhan has taught at the University of Toronto, York University, Wisconsin State University, and other educational institutions.

He died while in Bogotá , where he was attending a university event. He left behind his wife, two daughters and a son, and four grandchildren.
