Erich Brand (born March 23, 1914 in Colmar ; † February 28, 2011 ) was a German micropalaeontologist and petroleum geologist.

Life

Brand went to school in Wiesbaden-Biebrich and from 1932 studied first medicine, then geology and paleontology in Frankfurt am Main, where he received his doctorate in 1937 under Rudolf Richter (micro-paleontological studies on the stratigraphy of the northwestern German lias). During the Second World War he was initially a soldier, but under the influence of Alfred Bentz he was assigned to oil prospecting and from 1944 at the Wintershall company near Celle, where he stayed after the war. In 1957 he moved the Wintershall headquarters to Kassel. From 1966 to 1970 he worked for Wintershall as a petroleum geologist in Libya and then headed oil exploration. In 1979 he retired.

In the 1980s he began the stratigraphic revision and paleogeographical interpretation of the data from oil wells for the area of the middle Jura in northern Germany, which were published in 2010. The GDR data available after the fall of the 1990s had made the work considerably more extensive.

With Heinz Malz he examined the ostracodes of the middle Jurassic in the 1960s and he continued his ostracodal studies later.

In 1962 he was involved in the handbook of micropalaeontology index fossils . He was a member of the German stratigraphic sub-commission for the Jura.
