Erich Freygang

Erich Freygang (born November 4, 1883 , † after 1948) was a German teacher, genealogist, writer, local researcher and conservationist.

Life

Freygang was a teacher in Hettstedt by profession and lived in the Kupferkammerhütte near this town, where he also worked as a genealogist (at the time known as a professional genealogist) and writer. His homeland-historical research, about which he has published several times, was particularly focused on his hometown and the mountain town of Hettstedt.

In 1928 he joined the NSDAP (membership no. 96.039) and worked, among other things, as district cultural warden. He was also a DAF and NSV member.

Since 1934 he was a voluntary district commissioner for nature conservation, 1st class in the Mansfeld mountain district . He was also the district commissioner for prehistory, history, mining and metallurgy at the district museum and from 1936 as the state archivist for the Mansfeld mountain district. Furthermore, Erich Freygang was also a district clerk for rural customs and family research and district customs supervisor for the district farmers.

In the spring of 1937 he suffered a serious motorcycle accident which resulted in a stay of several months in the Knappschaftskrankenhaus Hettstedt. The hoped-for complete healing of his thigh fracture did not materialize.

In 1940 he resigned from the office of state archivist because of overwork in order to be able to dedicate himself fully to nature conservation on a voluntary basis. His successor as archivist was Walter Probst .

As commissioner for natural monuments, Erich Freygang was specifically responsible for the registration and protection of natural monuments in the Mansfeld mountain range. In addition, he was particularly interested in bird protection.
