Erichthonios (Dardania)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Erichthonios ( Greek  Ἐριχθόνιος ) is a figure in Greek mythology . He was the son of Dardanos , king of Dardania , and Bateia , (although other legends say his mother was Olizone ).

Erichthonius became king of Dardania when his older brother Ilos died childless. He was considered one of the richest of all mortals, Homer called him "the richest man on earth" because he inherited both kingdoms, from his father and from his mother's father. Erichthonios' wealth came from his horses, which were said to be miraculous. 3000 mares with their young foals grazed on his land, so light and fast that they were called children of the north wind Boreas . With Erichthonios' mares, Boreas sired twelve amazing, wind-fast foals.

"... whose steps did not bend the blades of grass, whose hoof did not wet the wave."

Together with Astyoche , the daughter of Simois (or Kallirrhoë , daughter of Skamandros ) he had a son Tros , from whom the people ( Teukrer or Dardaner ) received the name Troer (Trojans) and the landscape the name Troas .
