The commemorative medal for aid in the castle fire in 1864 was donated on September 3, 1864 by Duke Ernst I of Saxony-Altenburg .

It could be awarded to all those who distinguished themselves through their determined and courageous intervention in the devastating fire of the residential palace on August 24, 1864.

The front of the bronze medal shows the donor's head facing to the right with the inscription ERNST HERZOG VON SACHSEN ALTENBURG . On the reverse the inscription IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE FIRE SERVICES SUCCESSFULLY DONE IN THE FIRE OF OUR RESIDENCE LOCK IN ALTENBURG ON AUGUST 24, 1864 .

The medal was worn on a crimson ribbon on the left chest.
