The commemorative symbol of the Knights of the Golden Spur

The commemorative symbol for the Knights of the Golden Spur was donated on April 21, 1918 by Emperor Karl of Austria , Apostolic King of Hungary, and was a commemorative symbol for the 47 knighted by the new King of Hungary at his coronation on December 30, 1916 Men. A parallel to another European order is the Papal Order of the Golden Spur .

Historical background

In the Middle Ages , golden spurs were used as a badge for the knighted man. They were therefore often called knights of the golden spur . In the Holy Roman Empire, such an accolade was made by the emperor or king or their agents. On the other hand, those who had received the accolade from the Pope personally put on a special badge in the form of a cross with an attached spur . The papal order of the golden spur finally developed from this tradition. The knights who were defeated in Hungary at the coronation ceremony of Charles I in 1916 received this commemorative sign for the first time in this ceremony, which is worn on the neck of the ribbon of the Royal Hungarian Order of St. Stephen . The commemorative mark itself is not a medal.

Appearance

The commemorative symbol shows the raised and white enameled Hungarian double cross in the center of its front , on the lower intersection of which a K can be seen, which stands for Karoly. Behind the white cross winds a green enamelled dragon held in gold, which symbolizes the reminder of the ancient dragon order from the 15th century and was very widespread in Hungary at the time. The dragon shown is surrounded by a golden spur, the spur of which is turned downwards. The entire memorial is outshone by the above Hungarian St. Stephen's crown. In contrast to the splendid front, the back of the commemorative sign is kept rather simple and only shows the shapes of the dragon, which are chased .

Carrying method

The commemorative sign of the Knights of the Golden Spur was worn around the neck on the ribbon of the Royal Hungarian Order of St. Stephen .
