The Erla 6 A is a German motor sailor from the 1930s, only one of which was built.

development

Franz Xaver Mehr , who worked for Erla Maschinenwerk , designed this aircraft as the Me 6 from 1935, mainly on a private initiative in his spare time; he commissioned Johannes Gronert for the static calculations. It was designed in such a way that, with the wings folded up, it could be accommodated in a space-saving manner on an area of 1.45 m × 6.60 m and transported on the road by motorcycle. The setup and dismantling had to be done by two people. Franz Xaver Mehr was able to convince the Erla operations manager Wolff von Wedelstaedt to build the motor glider in the Leipzig plant. Was scheduled to participate in a competition, which the NSFK wanted to perform to trainee pilot to switch from sail - to facilitate engine aircraft. The flight tests of the aircraft, now known as Erla 6 A , were carried out at DVL by Heinz Kensche , while the suitability test of the Schliha engine , which was actually designed for motorcycles, was carried out at the same time . After the successful acceptance, the designation D – YDEM was assigned to the sample . At the motor glider competition of the NS.-Fliegerkorps , which took place in Rangsdorf from October 13 to 17, 1937 , the Erla 6 A with the start number 4 competed against the only other participating motor glider, the ESM 5 developed by Edmund Schneider . Both planes were designed as high- wing aircraft with nose drive and tail skid. Schneider's design took first place in the elimination, followed by the Erla 6 A in front of the other eight aircraft involved. Despite the very good performance, the NSFK did not place an order to build further aircraft. The presentation at the aviation fairs in Belgrade in July 1938 and in Brussels in June of the following year, as well as a praising press article from March 1938, did not result in any orders, so the Erla 6 A remained a one-off.

construction

The Erla 6 A was a strutted high-wing aircraft in all-wood construction . The construction was kept simple and the materials used were easy to obtain so that the aircraft could also be built by aviation groups on their own initiative. The hull, made of wooden ribs and straps, was planked with plywood. The front area was designed so that the main landing gear could be replaced by a skid. The engine was attached to a steel suspension lined with aluminum. The fuel tank was behind the pilot's seat. The continuous wing consisted of a main and auxiliary spar , a torsion-resistant front edge made of plywood , plywood planking in the front area up to the spar and fabric covering behind it. The tail unit was self-supporting and consisted of wood with plywood-clad fins and fabric-covered oars. The landing gear was formed by two V-struts and spring struts leading to the upper trunk straps with two balloon tires 380 × 150 mm and a grinding spur at the stern.
