Ermengol (Osona)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ermengol († August 21, 940 ~ 942) was a Count of Osona from the House of Barcelona . He was a son of Count Sunyer of Barcelona and brother of Borrell II and Miró .

Ermengol was endowed with the county of Osona by his father, as the count of which he is mentioned only once in a document in a donation from his father to the church of Santa María de Moià on 23 August 939. Since, unlike his brothers, he was given a fiefdom during his father's lifetime, he was probably his eldest son. The necrology of the Abbey of Santa Maria de Ripoll recorded Ermengol's death in battle on August 21, without specifying a year or the circumstances of his death. His father had made a donation to the same abbey on September 6, 943 as an indulgence for the sins of Ermengol, who must have fallen by then. Historical research places his death in the year 942, in a defensive battle against a Hungarian cavalry troop invading Catalonia near Baltarga ( Comarca Baixa Cerdanya ).
