As investigation file is referred to in the Criminal Procedure Law , a record which the chronological or sorted according to other aspects paper version of an investigation involves a whole.

Simple investigation files are sorted chronologically, starting with the criminal complaint . This is followed by the investigations carried out on the basis of the complaint (e.g. hearing of witnesses).

The investigation file is filed with the authority where the criminal complaint is filed or received. As a rule, this happens to the police , but the report can also be made to the public prosecutor's office , who will then forward it to the police for further investigations.

Examples

In a murder investigation, trace and photo files are required on a regular basis.

In an investigation against a serial burglar, case files for each individual crime are regularly useful.

If the break-ins are committed by a group of perpetrators, personal files are useful in addition to the case files, from which the individual person's contribution to each offense can be seen.

After the police investigation has been completed, the investigation file is handed over to the public prosecutor , where it is given a public prosecutor's file number .

If an indictment is brought in the present investigation, the investigation file will be passed on to the court.
